    North Fork Lumber Company Controller

    North Fork Lumber Company is a family-owned sawmill that is seeking a team player to fill the position of Controller.  NFLC is one of the Schmidbauer Family Sawmills operations and is a leading wood products manufacturing company based in beautiful Humboldt County, California.  Locally owned and operated since 1971, Schmidbauer has operations in three states and employs over three hundred people in Northern California.

     

    JOB DESCRIPTION:
    The Controller oversees the preparation and review of the monthly financial package for the NFLC sawmill operation and owns the division accounting processes and procedures. They will also prepare and review analyses of key metrics of the business, looking for opportunities to add value to the operation. Additionally, the Controller will work with accounting management and other division Controllers to ensure that appropriate controls are in place for all significant business processes.

    RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Responsible for month-end closing process including journal entries, standard reporting package, account reconciliations, and statistical metric preparation and evaluation.
    • Analyze monthly statement in terms of key trends in sales, costs, productivity, and margins and review with the operations manager.
    • Develop and execute process improvement strategies across the accounting function, collaborating cross-functionally to enhance financial accuracy, efficiency, and internal controls.
    • Ensures compliance with Company policies and procedures and ensures internal controls are in place.
    • Capital and major project planning and tracking processes for the operation.
    • Coach/develop/mentor accounting team members.

     

    JOB REQUIREMENTS & QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Working knowledge of business systems and processes as they relate to an operation’s financial reporting.
    • More than five years’ experience in a financial and/or business services capacity.
    • Improvement oriented and focused on identifying business operating efficiencies.
    • Good working knowledge of manufacturing or the lumber industry desirable.
    • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written, as part of a team environment.
    • In depth knowledge of MS Office (Outlook, Excel, and Word).
    • Detail focused and ability to multi-task with strong organizational skills.
    • Ability to work with tight deadlines and prioritize tasks.
    • Four-year degree or equivalent experience.
    • CPA desired, not required.

    COMPENSATION:

    • The general wage range for this position is from $90,000 to $130,000 per year, and is dependent upon several factors, including, but not limited to: relevant work experience, skill, knowledge, and/or education.

    Entry Level Log Scaling Assistant (Willits, CA)

    North Fork Lumber Company is looking to hire an entry level Log Scaling Assistant to work in our log yard.

    Primary duties include measuring log lengths and marking logs ahead of the Log Scalers. Additional duties include yard cleanup, general log yard maintenance, and other duties as assigned.

    This is a full-time temporary  position in our Willits Log Yard to provide additional staff during the summer operating season. We are looking for candidates that can work from April through November.

    No prior experience is necessary to apply. The ideal candidate would be a motivated individual that enjoys working as a team, outdoors in a production style environment. This is an ideal position for someone interested in learning about log scaling, sawmills, and the timber industry.

    Applicants must have a valid driver’s license and be able to pass a pre-employment drug, alcohol and physical screening. This temporary position starts at $22.05/ hr and offers 40 hours a week with frequent overtime plus benefits.

    Log Scaler

    At North Fork Lumber Company, we are committed to a safe and prosperous future for our team

    North Fork Lumber has an exciting opportunity for an experienced Log Scaler to Join our log yard team.
    This new position will provide assistance to Trinity River Lumber Company, Schmidbauer Lumber
    Company, and North Fork Lumber Company’s Log Scaling team and will be based at North Fork Lumber
    Company’s site in Korbel California.
    Essential Functions include:
    • Scaling and grading by utilizing the official log scaling rules for Scribner Short Log Decimal C.
    • Determine gross and net board feet of logs presented.
    • Professionally interact with regulatory agencies and mutual business professionals.
    • Represent the company in a professional and positive manner.
    • Assist in the log yard other tasks such as remanufacturing logs & operating water truck.
    • Assist the Timber Manager and Log Yard Supervisor with other projects as needed.
    The ideal candidate would have a minimum of 3 years of log scaling experience and is proficient in
    identifying and scaling of Douglas fir, western hemlock, grand fir, white fir, redwood, pine, and cedar.
    Additionally, the successful candidate must have the ability to use customized inventory control
    software, similar software programs, keyboarding and have knowledge of scaling computers.
    Candidates must have the ability to set priorities, meet goals and objectives, have a positive demeanor

    and the ability to lead and/or function within a team. Candidate must be able to multitask in a fast-
    paced environment, possess excellent communication skills and the ability to be organized and self-
    motivated.

  • Job Opening

    Full-time Electrician

    North Fork Lumber Company is a family owned Sawmill that is seeking a team player to fill the position of Sawmill Electrician. We are looking to fill this position with a person who is self-motivated, a conscientious team player with a positive attitude and good work history. Please see the following minimum requirements for this position.

    Essential Functions include:

    • 3-5 years experience in sawmill environment, preferred
    • Ability to work safely / understands Lock out / Tag out
    • Ability to interpret electrical schematics and drawings
    • Ability to use electrical test equipment, multi meter, megger, amp probe
    • Basic understanding of PLCs and ladder logic
    • Ability to weld a plus but not necessary
    • Trouble shoot electrical issues independently
    • Familiar with 480v 3 phase motor starters
    • Ability to troubleshoot 240v, 120v, and 24v circuits
    • Hydraulic troubleshooting a plus
    • Knowledge of Variable Frequency Drives a plus
    • Available to work overtime and weekends
